The NRPTT is registered as a non-governmental organization (NGO) with general category consultative status with the United Nations Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) since 1995. In this framework, the NRPTT has made it possible for a large number of people and organizations working in the field of democracy and human rights to be represented at the UN Human Rights Council and to present their claims in that forum to State representatives, diplomats, international media and other NGOs.
Currently, the NRPTT is engaged in bringing the campaign for the human right to know to the center of debate at the United Nations. As it did for the General Assembly Moratorium on the Death Penalty and the establishment of the International Criminal Court, this entails the active participation of diplomatic representatives and like-minded non-governmental organizations on the issue. To kickstart the campaign at the United Nations level, a round-table was held at the Palais des Nations in Geneva in May 2016, with the participation of Permanent Representatives of Canada, Italy, Ireland, Mexico and Morocco. The aim of the campaign is the establishment of the human rights principle of the citizen’s right to know what, how and why Governmental Institutions decide during the entire decision-making process, thus completing the existing framework of freedom of expression and opinion, media freedom and the right to receive and impart information.
Furthermore, true to its tradition, the NRPTT continues to share its platform with Unrepresented and oppressed Peoples and Nations around the world. It does so in close collaboration with its partner UNPO by organizing side-events to the Human Rights Council in Geneva, the submission of oral and written statements, participation in the Universal Periodic Review process and in dedicated forums in New York and Geneva.
